MORE ABOUT THE SACRAMENT

Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing is available to individuals who are struggling with a serious physical, psychological or spiritual infirmity, to the elderly, and to individuals who are about to undergo serious surgery.

The purpose of the Sacrament is three-fold:

  • First, to grant the one receiving it the grace to persevere through their infirmity—enduring it with Christ on the cross, and so not despairing.
  • Second, to enable God’s grace to accomplish a physical healing if it be for the patient’s ultimate spiritual and corporal wellbeing;
  • Third, to remit unconfessed mortal sin if the patient has fallen into unconsciousness.

Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, (James 5:14)

THE CHURCH TEACHES
Extreme Unction is a true sacrament instituted by Christ and proclaimed by St. James. It is administered by anointing with blessed oil accompanied by prayer. Only a priest can validly administer it. It can be received by any baptized person who has reached the age of reason and is on account of sickness or age in danger of death. Its effect is the strengthening of the soul, often of the body as well, and in the necessary conditions remission of sins.
